Ten Artists You Need To Know

Writer's picture: Paul CPaul C

Updated: Nov 20, 2018

As part of top 10 series, I list out some of my favourite artists that you may or may not have heard about.

10. Jared Hart

Jared Hart is a musician from New Jersey. He's the frontman for Mercy Union and The Scandals as well releasing a lot of solo material. I first discovered Jared when I saw him open for Brian Fallon in Toronto in 2016. With a rasping voice and an ear for catchy melodies, the first track you need to know of his is called Heads or Tails.

Other songs: Lucky Seven, The Guillotine and The Leo.

9. Dave Hause

Another artist I've discovered from Brian Fallon. Hause hails from Philadelphia and has been on the scene since the mid 90s. He has fronted many bands and has performed solo on many occasions, mainly supported by his brother Tim. Dave is one of the best singers I've ever heard and is a genuine friendly person. I chatted to him for some time at Gaslight Anthem's Dublin show this summer but I will let his music do the talking.

Other Songs: The Flinch, With You and Shaky Jesus.

8. Frank Turner

Frank Turner has been active since 2001 and I have only recently gotten into his stuff. He would always be recommended to me by Spotify, but for whatever reason, it took me a long while to finally come round to him. It was his most recent album, Be More Kind that did the trick. Here is the title track from that album.

Other Songs: Little Changes, Blackout and Photosynthesis.

7. Ghost

The Swedish metal band have come to mainstream attention this year because they're supporting Metallica on their upcoming European tour and their new hit filled album Prequlle has received critical acclaim. More will be said about Ghost on this blog in the future as part of some college assignments but for now, all you need to hear is the track posted below.

Other Songs: If You Have Ghosts, Dance Macabre and Spirit.

6. Lucero

Another band I discovered thanks to Spotify. Lucero are a country punk rock band hailing from Memphis, Tennessee. Fronted by Ben Nichols, they've been around since 1998 and have released 11 albums, mainly by their own label called Liberty & Lament. Fans of AMC's The Walking Dead should recognise Nichols voice, as one of his solo songs Last Pale Light In The West has been used for the show, however, the first track you need is Raisin' Hell.

Other Songs: Went Looking For Warren Zevon's Los Angeles, Baby Don't You Want Me and I'm In Love With A Girl.

5. Chuck Ragan

Yet another artist I discovered through Brian Fallon. The Texan native, Ragan has been playing for nearly 3 decades. Like others already mentioned before, Ragan flip flops from playing in bands and playing solo. He was the creator of the Revival Tour. This was a tour that first happened in 2008 and the last tour was in 2012. The show would last over 3 hours and many artists would take to the stage to play acoustically. The Revival Tour will have its own post soon enough, but for now, check out these songs.

Other Songs: Nomad By Fate, Meet You In The Middle and Wish On The Moon.

4. Carpenter Brut

Now for something completely different. A French synthwave artist called Carpenter Brut. Frank Hueso is the main man behind this act. The act is shrouded in mystery and anonymity because Frank wants the attention on the music and not the people behind it. The music is catchy, heavy and energetic. Synthwave is a beautiful under-appreciated genre of music and listening to Carpenter Brut is a great launch pad for this type of music.

Other Songs: Hairspray Hurricane, Le Perv and Maniac (Cover).

3. Daughter

An indie folk band from England that many people may already know about, but should be getting more attention. Chilling, atmospheric and beautiful are all adjectives that can be used to describe their music. They first came to my attention from playing the game Life is Strange, which is one of the most interesting games in recent times. Daughter's music is fantastic and they should be getting more attention than they already do.

Other Songs: Burn It Down, Youth and The Right Away Around.

2. Volbeat

Another Scandinavian metal band makes the list. Volbeat come from Denmark and are lead singer Michael Poulsen's creation. Some may know of them but not enough in my opinion. I saw them open for Metallica twice before and to this day, they are still the best support act they've ever had that I have seen. Poulsen created the band in 2001 and they have been firing on all cylinders since then. Volbeat are a mix of metal, country and rockabilly. Metallica, Johnny Cash and Elvis all rolled one into one.

Other Songs: Guitar Gangsters and Cadillac Blood, The Garden's Tale and Fallen.

1. Brian Fallon

The Red Bank native and heir to Springsteen's New Jersey throne, Brian Fallon has had an outstanding career to date. Mainly known for his time as frontman of The Gaslight Anthem, he's been making waves as a solo artist since the band went on indefinite hiatus in 2015 excluding the 10 year anniversary tour for The 59 Sound album this summer. Like other artists already mentioned, a lot more will be said about this incredible artist in the future on this blog, but it would be remiss of me to not have him at number 1 in this list.

Since I discovered Gaslight in 2012, they have been sitting on top with Metallica as my favourite band. Fallon's music whether it's solo or in a band, it perfectly encapsulates many aspects of life such as love, dreams, regrets and new beginnings.

Other Songs: Handwritten(Gaslight Anthem), Red Lights(Molly and The Zombies) and Open All Night (Solo).
