The Takeaway

This is being submitted as a college assignment.

This year in college, we were faced with many challenging tasks. Creating a radio documentary was one of them. Having created radio packages before, the skills were there, but putting something coherent and somewhat interesting for 30 minutes is hard. A good idea was needed. Initially, I focused on some music ideas. Metallica were first. That didn't happen. Old music venues were a runner for a while but fell short of the line.

Frustrated with the ideas falling apart and the weather being awful, on a dark and deary night in February I faced another challenge, "What to watch on Netflix?" I didn't want to rely on old favourites such as Rick and Morty or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I looked at my saved list and tried a TV show I had heard so much about, but never watched.

Anthony Bourdain, chef turned journalist turned TV presenter was a jack of all trades, but mastered them all. A world renowned chef and a fantastic writer and presenter. The first episode I watched was the Copenhagen episode. The thought of eating fancy and wacky food that was featured in the episode such as wild moss seemed ludicrous to me, yet now, I would say why not?

Parts Unknown is a gripping and fascinating travel and food show. One I could not recommend more. Another one of his shows was called The Layover. He would spend 36 hours or so in a city and dive into the best bars, restaurants and sights the city would have to offer to make the most of your time. The Dublin episode of this featured Bourdain and other pub revelers feasting on a huge late night meal in Roma II on Camden street. A world famous chef eating a whirly burger, that was Bourdain.

Coming out of Whelan's one night, waiting on a friend, I turned and saw the sign for Roma II. I decided to go there with my friend and eat some of the food Bourdain did. I then had the idea to make a documentary about food and the stories of the people who make it, who deliver it and eat it. Whilst food is the main crux of Bourdain's shows, politics, life, stories and music all feature as well.

The documentary is nearly ready and here are two clips from it.
